Fake News: What Should We Do About It?
Fake News: What Should We Do About It?
Singapore recently adopted a sweeping law that will carry warnings on sites like Facebook that when people post information, if the government deems it as false news, it will have a flag on it. Most people find this as a problem because it eliminates the right of free speech. This law also prohibits people from posting comments that go against "public interest."
I find this new law in Singapore to be a little bit extreme because it does impede the publics' right to free speech. If the United States were to create a law like this one I fully believe that there would be a dramatic increase in deaths, riots and other harmful activities. Instead of going to the extreme and having users delete their comments and flag their posts, there should be other ways to battle the "fake news" that is circulating around.
There should be and Artificial Intelligence system made so that there is a two factor authentication for people posting information on any social media site to tag the source that it came from. If the user cannot provide these details, it should not allow them to post or share/spread an article that they found. In regard to commenting on others' posts, this should be allowed, to share personal opinion, but if facts are involved in the comment, the source also is required.
What do you think about this topic? Are there other methods that should be used to prevent fake news from being spread?

I totally agree with you that if the United States were to create a law like this that there would be rioting and just problems overall. As Americans, I know we do not like being told what to do because we feel we have our freedoms so we shouldn't have someone take that away from us. I like your idea about the Artificial Intelligence system, it's very interesting and definitely something that large social media platforms should look into!
